As the leaders of Icon Agency, it’s important that we acknowledge our points of privilege AND be transparent about how we’re navigating power dynamics with care and accountability.

IDENTITIES & SOCIAL LOCATION:

We’re both white, cisgender, straight, hardcore feminist peeps with American citizenship and college degrees. We grew up in middle class communities with relative financial comfort. These are privileges, but we both have other identities that are marginalized, like being Jewish. And although we’re both able-bodied (for now), Erica navigates ADHD and depression and gets what it’s like to have a brain that works differently from most people

TRANSPARENCY & ACCOUNTABILITY:

Listen: this shit is messy. Practicing equity, justice, and inclusion doesn’t come with a checklist of the “right” stuff to do, and we’re always going to be doing our best with what we know at the time. This is a forever work-in-progress. As the Icon Agency gets off the ground, we’re creating an action plan for how we’ll practice these 10 values.

We’re exploring new systems to make our content and services accessible for disabled people, whether you’re neurodivergent (like Erica!), navigate mental health challenges, need live captions, and more.

We’re vegan, and we rescue senior basset hounds. You don’t have to be vegan to work with us, but you should know that we REALLY give a fuck about animals.

As a company, we’re unapologetically pro-choice. Period. We support abortion funds, vote for pro-choice candidates, and believe that no one should tell you what to do with your body.

We’re forming relationships with anti-racist consultants to keep baking anti-racist values into all aspects of our business. We’re especially clear that we need to build stronger connections with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) experts so that we can bring them in as collaborators.

Based on the poem about brave spaces by Beth Strano, we want The Icon Agency to be a space where you can be your full-ass self, and where mistakes are met with care and accountability. A brave space isn’t the same thing as a “safe” space, because everyone needs different stuff to feel safe. We can’t guarantee safety for everyone, but we can definitely commit to being brave together.

We strive to meet people where they’re at as much as we can – always from a place of Radical Generosity (see more on that below). For starters, we’re playing with different models for a scholarship fund! We’re getting connected with Indigenous folks in Mexico City, where we live. One initial action step we’re taking to support Indigenous rights is donating to PSYDEH, a local organization that funds Indigenous women leaders.

By the end of 2022, we’re hiring an equity-inclusion consultant who identifies as trans to help us with this. Including pronouns on our website and marketing materials is a first step.

Power with is built on “respect, mutual support, shared power, solidarity, influence, empowerment, and collaborative decision[-]making,” and power to is built on the “unique potential of every person to shape [their] life and world.”
